Septa Shield Kit

The Septa Shield Kit protects dentists who are at risk from exposure to mercury contaminated particles generated during the removal of amalgam fillings. Even with all engineering controls some particulate matter will escape collection. This unique, reusable shield protects the face and neck from splashes, sprays and abrasions. The Septa Shield Kit is durable, long lasting and made of a lightweight polycarbonate shield that weighs 7.9 oz, has a 2mm thickness and is 12 inches high. The comfortable fit provides air circulation for long wear. The shield is held in place by an adjustable, Velcro strap. One size fits all.

A 2019 study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Occupational Medicine and Toxicology (JOMT) shows that the safety limits for mercury exposure (originating from mercury particulate) can be exceeded during dental procedures involving the drilling on amalgam fillings if special precautions are not in place, according to the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT).

After analysis of the previously published research about mercury releases during amalgam removal, crucial new data is quantified in the latest study on this topic, which is entitled “Mercury vapor volatilization from particulate generated from dental amalgam removal with a high-speed dental drill – a significant source of exposure.”

Lead author David Warwick, DDS, notes of the study: “Based on our findings, we are recommending dentists implement engineering controls as required by OSHA in addition to the supplemental recommendations identified in our study when amalgam is drilled on by a high-speed drill.
