It is important to change out the VGM3 filters on a regular basis as mercury vapor is invisible and has no odor or taste, so you will not be able to use your senses to determine if the filter should be changed. My hose slumps, how can I make it more stable?

All new orders starting from 6/16/2020 will ship with a 5′-6″ hose (previous units shipped with a 6″ hose)

Regarding the concern about the flexible hose, let me first explain our rational to use this type of hose for the dental aerosol extraction, as there are other extraction arms such as the articulating metal arms that you may see provided with some other units. Based on many feedbacks we have received from the dental community, the concern is accumulation of germs in the articulating metal pipe and connecting joints, which are very difficult to clean and sanitize. Therefore, we have gone with the flexible hose where we further process it to make it more rigid and self-supporting. Accumulation of germ is much reduced in this hose and further sanitization of it is practical. Some offices maintain a spare hose, where they interchange while they sanitize the other one, with the use of a brush with a long handle and sanitizing liquid applied over a sink.

Is the unit for Inside Recycled Air or Outside Ventilation?

The VANGUARD Mobile 3 Oral Aerosol Vacuum system ships as a recycled air unit.

What does the Negative Pressure Room mean?

Negative pressure in the room (so that air flows under the door gap into the room) and leakage of contaminated air is avoided into the other rooms. HealthyAir® Source Capture System can be set up to provide multiple air changes per hour.

How do I figure out the Air Changes per hour (ACH) of the Unit?

The air change/hr (ACH) is a simple calculation as follows:

1: calculate the volume of air in the room, for 10’x 10’ with 8’ celling, the volume will be 800cubic ft. Then the single inlet unit at the mid speed moves 90 cfm, so in one hour 90 x60 min/hr = 5,400 cubic of air has been treated by the unit. You then divide 5,400 / 800 and get 6.75, meaning that the air in the room goes 6.75 times through the unit per hour. ACH of 6 is generally recommended for the existing negative pressure rooms. At high speed, the unit delivers 130 cfm, so the ACH would be 9.75.

Larger rooms would require more CFM. One approach could be to use HealthyAir® Source Capture dual inlet unit with 122 CFM rating at mid speed. This will provide ACH of 6.35 for a 12’ x 12’with 8’ ceiling. Possible use of the dual inlet unit would be to use one hose for source capture and the other for general air extraction for another side of the chair or another location in the room.

Off course this is just an approximate number, as the air in the corner of the room may have a longer time to go through the unit, than the air close to the air purifier. But that is what is used to specify the ACH. Think of your swimming pool and the filter system. If you pass the dirty water in one section through the filter most of the time, instead of the water in the other side of the pool which may be cleaner, then the resulting pool will be much cleaner. That is the concept of source capture.

What is the CFM of the VANGUARD Mobile 3 Unit?

REGARDING CFM (see attached graphic)

Every fan has an airflow/pressure curve, as shown in the attached graphic. The free delivery is when the fan is running by itself outside of any enclosure, where there is no resistance to air flow. A lot of air purifiers specify the free delivery as the air flow rate, which is very misleading and means nothing about the actual unit. Dentairvac statement of 770 cfm and 12 air changes is not accurate. Note that in the same spec, they then say the fan rating is noted as 770 cfm. There is a big difference when you put a fan with this rating into a box and connect a hose to it. The resulting CFM is much less.

When you install the fan in an enclosure with some filters, that create resistance to flow of air, or pressure drop, inch of water. There is a relationship between the airflow through that system and the pressure drop.

That is the yellow line in above picture. When that line intersect the fan curve, that establishes the actual flow rate of the unit, that is the 127 CFM of the VANGUARD Mobile 3 unit. That CFM is constant through out the unit, what ever it is at the inlet of the hose, it is the same through the unit and that is what discharges, this is conservation of mass. Whatever goes in, must comes out.

What are the Weight and Dimensions of the VANGUARD Mobile 3 unit?

The approximate weight and base dimensions of the unit is: 39 lbs. – 14” x 10” w x 21.5” . The extraction arm hose length is 6 feet long. This portable floor unit is designed to be positioned in close proximity to the workstation, however in some cases remote location of units is required.

Is the hose flexible?

Yes, by easily adjusting the flexible hose, the hoods of the extraction arms can be strategically positioned to capture impure air.

How long is the hose that ships with the VANGUARD Mobile 3 unit?

We ship out a single 6 foot hose with each unit. The length of the hose will affect the CFM at the inlet of the hose.

Increasing hose length, increases the pressure loss which decreases the CFM
Increasing hose diameter, decreases the pressure loss and increases the CFM

How noisy is the VANGUARD Mobile 3 unit?

The VANGUARD Mobile 3 unit offer a simple remote-control operation and is equipped with a three-speed fan that enables control of air flow and sound level.

Low Speed: 50 dBA
Medium: 52 dBA
High: 54 dBA

One cannot have powerful oral suction without noise from a fan as the more cfm and pressure you treat, there will be more noise.

Do you sell a plastic cover for the VANGUARD Mobile 3 hose inlet?

We are working towards offering a disposable plastic cover that would go over the outside of the front and inlet of the hose. But at this time we do not have a specific product for sale. Until then, one can utilize the plastic head rest cover from their dental chair and cut a hole in it to place over the front of the hose inlet as seen in the picture to the left.

Does the VANGUARD Mobile 3 unit come with a filter?

Yes, each VANGUARD Mobile 3 unit will come with a Charcoal Filter that will last roughly 15 hours of continuous use and a HEPA Filter that should be changed out every 3 months.

Take Precautions When Performing Aerosol-Generating Procedures (AGPs)

Some procedures performed on patient with known or suspected COVID-19 could generate infectious aerosols. In particular, procedures that are likely to induce coughing (e.g., sputum induction, open suctioning of airways) should be performed cautiously and avoided if possible.
If performed, the following should occur:
- HCP in the room should wear an N95 or higher-level respirator, eye protection, gloves, and a gown.
- The number of HCP present during the procedure should be limited to only those essential for patient care and procedure support. Visitors should not be present for the procedure.
- AGPs should ideally take place in an AIIR.
- Clean and disinfect procedure room surfaces promptly as described in the section on environmental infection control.

What is an Airborne Infection Isolation Room (AIIR)?

Formerly, negative pressure isolation room, an AIIR is a single-occupancy patient-care room used to isolate persons with a suspected or confirmed airborne infectious disease. Environmental factors are controlled in AIIRs to minimize the transmission of infectious agents that are usually transmitted from person to person by droplet nuclei associated with coughing or aerosolization of contaminated fluids.

AIIRs should provide

negative pressure in the room (so that air flows under the door gap into the room);
and an air flow rate of 6-12 ACH (6 ACH for existing structures, 12 ACH for new construction or renovation);
and direct exhaust of air from the room to the outside of the building or recirculation of air through a HEPA filter before retruning to circulation (MMWR 2003; 52 [RR-10]; MMWR 1994; 43 [RR-13]).

What is the MERV rating of VANGUARD Mobile 3 HEPA filters?

The HEPA filters are a hybrid filters that use a lower MREV rated filter, add electrostatic field to it to result in a filter with higher equivalent MERV ratings. Standard units have an equivalent MERV rating of 16/17, while units can be made with even higher equivalent MERV rating to E12/H13.

What happens if my unit breaks after the warranty has expired?

A 1 year warranty came with your unit from the date of purchase. When purchasing your unit, you had the option to extend your warranty by purchasing a filter subscription that aligns with the manufacturer recommendations for the filter change out schedule. We would have extended your warranty as long as you had continued to maintain your filter change out schedule.

Does the VANGUARD Mobile 3 Oral Aerosol Vacuum System capture mercury?

The science is clear. The process of removing amalgam fillings generates vast amounts of both mercury vapor and mercury contaminated particulate matter that become aerolsized in the breathing zone of the dental professionals. The ultra-fine mercury particles are filtered out in the HEPA filter, while the gaseous mercury is captured by the activated carbon filter.

When mercury is captured by activated carbon, both physisorptive as well as chemisorptive mechanisms come into play. Untreated activated carbon, which is used in the VANGUARD Mobile 3 activated carbon filter, captures gaseous mercury by physisorption, like a porous sponge collection.

Treated activated carbon, which will be available by this fall captures mercury by both mechanisms and provides an even higher filter life before replacement is needed, which is estimated to be as much as three to four times higher.

The virus that causes COVID-19 is approximately 0.125 micron (125 nanometers) in diameter. That falls squarely within the particle-size range that HEPA filters capture with extraordinary efficiency: 0.01 micron (10 nanometers) and above. Many media outlets have incorrectly stated that HEPA filters don’t filter below 0.3 micron, and therefore could not capture airborne coronavirus. That is incorrect.
