SMART – Patient Protection Sections A & B: Activated Charcoal and Chlorella

The patient should be given a slurry of charcoal, chlorella, or similar adsorbent to rinse and swallow before the procedure (unless the patient declines or there are other contraindications making this clinically inappropriate).24 25 26 27

Charcoal powder can be extremely messy, which is why we offer charcoal in capsule form as the capsules can be broken open, poured and mixed into water for the patient to swish in their mouth.

SMART – PATIENT PROTECTION – Sections C & D: Non-Latex Rubber Dam and Dam Sealer

hgx cream in action A dental dam (47, 48, 49, 50, 51) that is made with non-latex nitrile material (52, 53, 54) should be placed and properly sealed in the patient’s mouth.

OPTIONAL ADD-ON: Read about how some dentists smear HgX cream on the dental dam before performing an amalgam removal to provide extra protection for the patient from mercury. Dentists also use HgX cream on their hands before donning their gloves to protect their skin from absorbing mercury. HgX cream can also be used on floor cleaners (such as a swiffer) to absorb and capture the mercury particles that settle onto the floor, which will continue to off gas mercury vapor into the dental operatory if not properly cleaned.

SMART PATIENT PROTECTION – Sections E and F: Complete Facial Cover and Neck Wrap

Protective gowns and covers for the dentist, dental personnel, and the patient should be in place.(28) All present in the room should be protected because substantial quantities of particles generated during the procedure will elude collection by suction devices.(29) It has been demonstrated that these particles can be spread from the patient’s mouth to the patient’s knee, and to the chest, shoulder, and neck of the dentist and dental assistant. (30)

In order to protect the patient’s skin and clothing, a full body, impermeable barrier, as well as a full head/face/neck barrier under/around the dam, should be utilized.(42 43)

External air or oxygen delivered via a nasal mask for the patient also should be utilized to assure the patient does not inhale any mercury vapor or amalgam particulate during the procedure. 44 45 46 A nasal cannula is an acceptable alternative for this purpose as long as the patient’s nose is completely covered with an impermeable barrier.
