AT SOURCE ORAL AEROSOL VACUUM Each room where mercury fillings are removed must have adequate filtration in place which requires a high-volume air filtration system (such as an at source oral aerosol vacuum) capable of removing mercury vapor and amalgam particles generated during the removal of one or more mercury fillings.

The HealthyAir® Oral Aerosol Vacuum & Air Purification System is the leader in protecting dental professionals from harmful aerosols. As contaminated air passes through the HealthyAir® Source Capture, the Pre-Filter, eHEPA® Filter, and Enhanced Carbon Catalytic Filter work in conjunction to capture ultra fine air borne particles and microorganisms, including virus, bacteria, mold, gasses, dust, smoke, allergens, odors, and VOCs, as well as mercury particulate and vapors. The unit ships with a 5′-6″ hose.
These units can be converted to an outside ventilation unit with the provided hardware.
The HealthyAir® Oral Aerosol Vacuum & Air Purification System also has an enhanced carbon catalytic filter which enables the system to be used for the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) to capture harmful mercury vapors and mercury particulate that are released during the removal of amalgam fillings. More information can be found in our comprehensive FAQ below.
Again, all HealthyAir oral aerosol vacuum units ship as recycled air units, but can be converted into outside vented units at your convenience.
SMART – Patient Protection Sections A & B: Activated Charcoal and Chlorella
The patient should be given a slurry of charcoal, chlorella, or similar adsorbent to rinse and swallow before the procedure (unless the patient declines or there are other contraindications making this clinically inappropriate).24 25 26 27
Charcoal powder can be extremely messy, which is why we offer charcoal in capsule form as the capsules can be broken open, poured and mixed into water for the patient to swish in their mouth.
60 vegi-capsules of Activated Charcoal (260mg each). Activated Charcoal should be used both before and after amalgam removal as recommended by the IAOMT in their Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART). Activated charcoal binds unwanted substances like mercury to its surface and releases them through fecal matter.
SMART – PATIENT PROTECTION – Sections C & D: Non-Latex Rubber Dam and Dam Sealer
A dental dam (47, 48, 49, 50, 51) that is made with non-latex nitrile material (52, 53, 54) should be placed and properly sealed in the patient’s mouth.
HgX® Hand Cream and Cleaner is especially made for those handling metallic mercury and mercurials. HgX® hand cream and cleaner is available in convenient 12 oz. jars, and should be used as an aid in industrial mercury hygiene daily routines.
SMART PATIENT PROTECTION – Sections E and F: Complete Facial Cover and Neck Wrap
Protective gowns and covers for the dentist, dental personnel, and the patient should be in place.(28) All present in the room should be protected because substantial quantities of particles generated during the procedure will elude collection by suction devices.(29) It has been demonstrated that these particles can be spread from the patient’s mouth to the patient’s knee, and to the chest, shoulder, and neck of the dentist and dental assistant. (30)
In order to protect the patient’s skin and clothing, a full body, impermeable barrier, as well as a full head/face/neck barrier under/around the dam, should be utilized.(42 43)

Coated for Scratch Resistance
99% Protection Against UV Rays
Exceeds ANSI Z87.1
OPTIONAL ADD-ON: While not specified in the SMART recommendations, some mercury will escape collection devices and the operatory will inevitably accumulate mercury contaminated particulate matter on surfaces and equipment. In order to decontaminate your office and equipment properly, we offer a container of 30 mercury particulate wipes per bottle.
External air or oxygen delivered via a nasal mask for the patient also should be utilized to assure the patient does not inhale any mercury vapor or amalgam particulate during the procedure. 44 45 46 A nasal cannula is an acceptable alternative for this purpose as long as the patient’s nose is completely covered with an impermeable barrier.
The Biflo Nasal Mask (for adults) delivers a gentle flow of oxygen. Unlike a nasal cannula, oxygen flow is not jetted into the nasal cavity. Does not require humidifiers, as the gas passes over the nasal turbinates it is being warmed and humidified naturally. A comfortable alternative for those who cannot tolerate a cannula. 25 per case.
Eliminates the need for foam ear wraps
Kink Resistant Oxygen Tubing
Not made with DEHP or Natural Rubber Latex, eliminating risk of allergic reactions
